Art Music Scotland can help composers and creative artists to develop their careers and practices in a number of different ways:
This might involve help with fundraising for a commission fee, support with planning and delivering a creative project with multiple aspects, admin and planning help, pitching a creative project to presenters or co-producers, or helping to refine a creative idea or work.
Many composers and creative artists find that the project management and admin side of their work interferes with the creative aspects, so if you think that Art Music Scotland might be able to facilitate and enable a more satisfying and productive creative practice then please get in contact.
The Composer Expo Day that was held on 6 October saw 29 Scottish composers and 9 Swedish composers meet with each other and a variety of curators, press, and performers. Considerate.digital’s media players allowed participants to immerse themselves in Sound Art works, and Svensk Musik were on hand to talk about publishing.
The intention is to extend this project in 2026 and hold a larger event.
Participation in the next edition of Nordic Music Days, a pop-up event at Baltic Music Days 2026, and a delegation to the 2026 UNM festival in Copenhagen are all currently being planned.
Attending Classical:NEXT, the ISCM World New Music Days, The International Forum of Composers of Baltic and Nordic Countries, the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and other events, and having strong working relationships with New Music Scotland, the Scottish Music Centre, and ensembles and festivals throughout the country allows the Art Music Scotland team to recommend and advocate for commissioning and performing works by Scottish composers. The launch of the new Scottish Composer Directory has also created an important resource which can be shared with curators and performers in order to provide an overview of who is active in Scotland.
A collaboration with the Society of Swedish Composers led to Nordic Music Journeys 2025: Sweden and Scotland, which provided a showcase opportunity for composers of instrumental and sound art works. More similar events are planned, and participation in a variety of festivals and venues is being discussed.
Curators and performers from abroad often ask about who is active and what is going on in the new music scene in Scotland. The Scottish Composer Directory is a single document that provides an overview of who is who, and what’s happening. Any professional composers are welcome to submit a page, which can then point potential collaborators towards their own websites or contact points.
